Bitfinex: We were defrauded of $880 million
Cryptocurrency platform Bitfinex says it has been a “victim of fraud” by Crypto Capital, a payment processing company that allegedly lost $880 million in Bitfinex funds.
Last week, Polish police arrested Crypto Capital chief Even Manuel Lee for money laundering, while US authorities charged Oz Yusef, a Crypto Capital executive, with conspiracy to commit bank fraud and an unauthorized money transfer service.
Lee, was arrested on suspicion of laundering approximately $350 million in assets derived from illicit proceeds and having links to Colombian drug cartels.
Polish prosecutors say he is accused of “laundering money for Colombian drug cartels using a cryptocurrency exchange.” The arrest also relates to approximately $350 million seized by the Polish Ministry of Justice from Crypto Sp, the Polish subsidiary of Crypto Capital.
Crypto Capital is an offshore company registered in Panama, where the US Department of Justice says it engages in shadow banking services to several cryptocurrency exchanges including Bitfinex, Binance, Cex.io, Coinapult and QuadrigaCX.
“We cannot speak for other Crypto Capital clients, but any suggestion that Crypto Capital’s laundered proceeds or any other illicit funds requested by Bitfinex or its clients are false,” said Stuart Hoegner, General Counsel at Bitfinex.
